In all its unpredictability, the past year has highlighted the crucial role of a thriving online ecosystem for a healthy society and, with it, the need for a resilient, high-speed telecommunications infrastructure across Europe.

For the past decades, Wi-Fi and 5G have shaped our world and business: the digital transformation has and will continue to be a key component of Europe’s ambitions, as set out in the 2030 Digital Compass. European SMEs are highly reliant on Wi-Fi and, today more than ever, innovative technologies like the next generation of Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi 6E, Wi-Fi 7, stand to transform society even further thanks to their higher speed, lower latency and potential for instant device-to-device connection.

Wi-Fi evolution will enhance performance and enable applications and devices in the fields of Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, thus opening up business opportunities for SMEs and startups and contributing to growth. To ensure this and remain competitive, we need to work together towards the establishment of the required spectrum for the 2030 Gigabit society. Although the journey to technological independence for Europe is still long, we need to lead and set standards underpinned by European values to have a lasting influence in the future global network architecture.
